Forza Horizon 5: 9 New Details We Learned from Playground's Gameplay Showcase Livestream - E3 2021 - IGN - IGN

Following a stunning reveal at yesterday's Xbox E3 showcase, Playground Games just hosted a short E3 livestream in which creative director Mike Brown and associate art director Conar Cross revealed a number of new details about the studio's upcoming driving sim.

After a bit of further reflection on why Forza Horizon 5 is the biggest, most diverse Forza Horizon game yet, here are the new bits we learned from the livestream:

Customization is better than ever

That goes for both cars and characters. On the car side, Forza Horizon 5 includes over 100 new rims, over 100 new visual upgrade parts, and thousands of performance upgrades. You can paint your brake calipers too, something that's long been requested by fans.

On the character side, there are more options for hairstyle and color than before. But also, importantly, you can set your pronouns and voice as separate options, and select prosthetics if you'd like your character to have them.

Forza Horizon 5 features the longest highway the series has ever seen

The developers weren't exactly sure how long the highway was precisely, but they did say it ran from corner to corner of the map, which we've already learned is Forza Horizon's largest map ever.

There are multiple Horizon festivals

Brown and Cross didn't give much more detail on what the other Horizon festivals would be like, but they did say that the main Festival is build on an old airstrip in the middle of the desert, with an old racetrack off to the side and a drag racing strip running through it all. And speaking of drag racing, there will be multiple drag races in Horizon 5 aside from the one through the main site.

Animals are smarter

Animal AI will interact more intelligently and believably with your car disturbing them, and animals in the game will include flamingos (seen in the trailer), wild dogs, domesticated dogs, donkeys, goats, and parrots. Jury is still out as to whether you can pet the dogs or not but given that you're, you know, in a car, it seems unlikely.

Forza Link will aim for smarter matchmaking

Forza Link is Horizon 5's new AI assistant that tracks the current status of you and everyone else in the world, along with your respective campaign and Festival progress and what kinds of activities you typically enjoy doing. Link is intended to remove the friction in grouping up with others, by pairing you up with others who have similar interests and progression. So, for instance, if you do a certain activity weekly but haven't done it yet in a given week, it will try and connect you with someone in a similar situation to complete it.

Arcade minigames are integrated seamlessly into the world

Forza's Arcade is a suite of minigames that you play in cooperation with others, and appear in the world as events you can drive up to seamlessly — no loading screens or anything. You'll be automatically grouped up with other players and will be able to work together with them to complete a certain challenge. One example is the piƱata game we saw in the trailer. Another, called Mini Missions, will tell you to complete certain tasks like "jump over another car" and everyone will work together to line up their cars so someone can do that and complete the task.

Events Lab is based on actual development tools

Forza Horizon 5's Events Lab, which we heard a bit about in our own interview with Brown, is based on actual development tools used by the design team, allowing players to make their own race and game rules, as well as dictate whether something is competitive, cooperative, or team-based. Remember that game mode where players were knocking over bowling pins in their cars from the trailer yesterday? That's made by Playground developers in Events Lab.

There will be convertibles at launch, and yes you can put the tops down

"A few" convertibles will be available in-game at launch, and while it wasn't explicitly said in the livestream, from the sound of it, the tops of the convertibles will actually stay down if you put them down. The team clarified later that they can't say much about specific cars in the game yet because they're still finalizing the car list. but they are embracing local car culture in their choices.

Guanajuato is like "two cities in one"

Guanajuato is the main big city in Forza Horizon 5, and Playground describes it as actually being more like two cities. There's the aboveground main city with colorful buildings and streets, as well as an explorable underground aqueduct system beneath with lots of small tunnels.

Forza Horizon 5 was announced alongside a ton of other exciting reveals at Xbox's E3 showcase yesterday, and thanks to games like Starfield, Redfall, and Forza Horizon 5, it's possible that Xbox's drought of exclusives is finally reaching an end.
